On Italian Stucco

What kind of building materials are not harmful to humans? Do not destroy the environment?
In thinking about this, we paid attention to building materials from when humans lived healthily like humans. It was in 1982.
The building materials used around that time were wood, stone, and lime.
This situation is the same regardless of East or West.
Japanese stucco begins in the Heian period.
Italian stucco is older, originating in the Roman era.

If it is genuine stucco based on lime, the wall surface never completely shuts off the air.
It absorbs moisture moderately, so it also adjusts humidity and is a material that is difficult to condense dew.
This may be the wisdom of ancient people.
The main component of stucco is slaked lime, and slaked lime is manufactured from limestone.
Slaked lime, the main component of stucco, gradually causes a chemical reaction with carbon dioxide in the air over a long time after being applied to the wall surface.
Written as a chemical formula, it is as follows.
Slaked lime = Ca(OH) 2
Ca(OH)2 + CO2 → CaCO3 + H2O
H2O is needless to say water. This becomes water vapor and evaporates.
CaCO3 is calcium carbonate. And calcium carbonate is limestone.
In other words, stucco changes into limestone over time.
However, as mentioned above, slaked lime, the main component of stucco, is manufactured from limestone.
That means that stucco made from limestone returns to the original limestone.
This is a natural cycle. Knowing this, I think there are mysterious things in the natural world.
At the same time, I admire the wisdom that our ancestors who should not have had such scientific knowledge used stucco.
Nowadays, the word SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is attracting attention, but our ancestors have been practicing it for a long time.
Limestone is literally stone. Stucco turns into hard stone over time.

I said that slaked lime is made from limestone, but there are two ways to make it.
Burning limestone and reacting it with water is the normal slaked lime manufacturing method. This slaked lime is powder.
On the other hand, there is a method of burning limestone and soaking it in water.
It is soaked in water for a long time and aged. This is the traditional Italian slaked lime manufacturing method.
Slaked lime manufactured by this method has stable quality.
This slaked lime is called GRASSELLO in Italian.
Our Italian stucco slaked lime uses GRASSELLO aged for about 2 years.
